Insurance can be very difficult to understand. Unfortunately, most scooters are Not Coded and Insurance Providers will not cover them. Insurance may cover Power Mobility Equipment for "In Home Use". This means the item is meant for use in the home to get the user from the kitchen to bathroom, and into the bedroom for "daily living activities". The patients home Must Be Wheelchair Accessible, including a ramp if necessary, which would have to be installed prior to approval by any insurance provider. The process to get a Power Mobility Item through insurance takes weeks to months. You will have to visit your doctor, then an appointment with a physical therapist, who will evaluate you and your needs. They will then write a letter of medical necessity explaining what equipment you need. Next, one of our Assistive Technology Professionals (ATP) will visit your home to do an in home assessment, measuring door ways, ramps, and checking for any hazardous fall situations.

Most customers intend to use a scooter outside of the home, which the insurance will not cover. Also, in many cases the insurance provider pays so little towards the item that it does not cover the cost of the product. Many Medical Equipment Providers around the country have opted out of providing Scooters through insurance due to these reasons and the low reimbursement rates.

When a customer is interested in a Scooter, the first question we ask is “Where do you want use a scooter?”. Do you need something to get you around your home or something to get you around the local shopping center? Do you want something that can travel around your property outdoors or would you like something that can get you to your child’s or grandchild’s soccer game? Do you need something compact that can fit into your car or perhaps you don’t own a car and need something to get you to a grocery store or even to work. There are many different types of scooters, some for indoor use, some for outdoor use, and some that can handle both. Some scooters can have a maximum speed of 3.5 mph to as much as 15 mph. They can also have a battery range of 5 miles to 35 miles per charge.

We will work with you to determine what kind of scooter can support your height, weight, and terrain needs. For example, a 4-wheel scooter with larger wheels and suspension is best for outdoor usage and can handle grass, gravel, and rough terrain. While a basic 3-wheel scooter is better for indoor use or on sidewalks and pavement.

**The Pride Mobility Go Go LX has been upgraded to the Go Go Endurance**

Three wheel scooters tend to be lighter weight than a four wheel scooter, so if you have a weight lifting restriction be sure to discuss that with our sales staff. Some models have head lights and tail lights for night time use, and some smaller units may not have any lights at all to keep the cost down. There are also many add-on products such as extra baskets, cane & crutch holders, oxygen tank holders, and even cell phone & beverage holders.
